10 Days in Sri Lanka: A Private Itinerary for First-Timers

Ten days is the sweet spot for a first trip to Sri Lanka. It is long enough to see ancient cities, tea hills, wild elephants and the southern beaches — without rushing. This is the route our local team plans most often for guests from the UK, Germany, Australia, India and the Gulf. Everything here can be done with a private car or van and your own chauffeur-guide, so you set the pace.

The 10-day route at a glance

  • Day 1: Arrive in Negombo (near the airport)
  • Days 2–3: Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa
  • Day 4: Kandy
  • Day 5: Nuwara Eliya (tea country)
  • Day 6: Ella, by the scenic train
  • Day 7: Yala National Park safari
  • Day 8: Mirissa beach
  • Day 9: Galle Fort
  • Day 10: Fly home

Day 1: Arrive in Negombo

Your chauffeur-guide meets you at the airport. Negombo is only 20–30 minutes away, so you can rest, walk the beach and watch the fishing boats at sunset. Nothing is planned today — that is on purpose.

Days 2–3: Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa

The drive north takes about 3.5 to 4 hours, with easy stops on the way. On day 2, climb Sigiriya Rock early, before the heat, then visit the cave temples of Dambulla. On day 3, explore the ruins of Polonnaruwa by bike or car, or go on a village jeep safari to see wild elephants. Two nights here means you are never rushed.

Day 4: Kandy

About 3 hours south, Kandy is the cultural heart of the island. Visit the Temple of the Tooth, stop at a spice garden on the way, and enjoy a traditional dance show in the evening.

Day 5: Nuwara Eliya, little England

The road climbs into the hills past waterfalls and tea estates. Nuwara Eliya is cool and green all year. Visit a tea factory, taste fresh Ceylon tea and see how it is made. Bring a light jacket for the evening.

Day 6: Ella, and the famous train

Take one of the most beautiful train rides in the world from Nuwara Eliya towards Ella (about 3 hours). Your chauffeur-guide meets you at the other end with the car. In Ella, walk to Nine Arches Bridge or up Little Adam’s Peak for the view.

Day 7: Yala safari

Drive down from the hills to Yala National Park, one of the best places in Asia to see leopards. Go on a late-afternoon jeep safari. You may also see elephants, crocodiles and many birds. For a quieter option, Udawalawe is great for elephants.

Day 8: Mirissa beach

Finish the safari with a morning game drive if you like, then head to the south coast. Mirissa is the place to relax: golden sand, palm trees and fresh seafood. From about December to April, you can add a blue-whale watching trip.

Day 9: Galle Fort

It is only about 45 minutes to Galle. Walk the old Dutch fort walls, browse the small shops and cafes, and enjoy the sunset from the ramparts. A perfect last evening.

Day 10: Fly home

The expressway takes you back to Colombo airport in around 2 hours. Your chauffeur-guide will plan the time so you arrive early and relaxed.

How to adapt this itinerary

Why travel with a private chauffeur-guide?

Sri Lankan roads are winding and slower than the map suggests. A local chauffeur-guide drives for you, tells you the story behind each place, and changes the plan when the weather or your mood changes. You do not need to rush for buses or share a coach with strangers. Our cars and vans are comfortable and our guides speak English, German, Hindi and Tamil, among other languages.

Best time for this route

December to April is best for the south coast and Yala. From May to September the hills and cultural triangle are still good, but the south can be rainy. Read our full month-by-month guide.

Visa and entry

Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before they fly. At the time of writing, Sri Lanka has been offering a free 30-day ETA to visitors from around 40 countries, including the UK, Germany, Australia, India and the UAE. Rules change, so always check the official ETA website before you book.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10 days enough for Sri Lanka?

Yes. Ten days covers the highlights of culture, hills, wildlife and beaches. If you want a slower pace, 12 to 14 days gives you extra beach and wildlife time.

How much does a 10-day Sri Lanka trip cost?

It depends on your hotel level, group size and the activities you choose. We do not use fixed public prices — send us your dates and we will plan a tailor-made trip and give you a clear quote.

Can I do this trip with a driver?

Yes, and we recommend it. A private chauffeur-guide takes the stress out of the long drives and the mountain roads.

What is the best month to travel?

December to April for the south coast and safaris. The hills are lovely all year.
