Sri Lanka is a year-round destination — you just need to know which coast to head to. The island has two monsoons that hit different coasts at different times, so when one side is rainy, the other is usually sunny and calm.

The simple rule: two monsoons

When rain is on the south-west coast, the east coast is sunny — and the other way around. So there's almost always somewhere with great weather.

December to April

Peak season on the south and west coasts: calm seas at Mirissa and Galle, blue-whale watching, and dry, easy safaris in Yala. Great for beaches and honeymoons.

May to September

Head to the east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay) for clear water and surf. This is also when the famous Minneriya elephant gathering happens.

All year: the tea hills

The hill country (Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Hatton) stays a cool, spring-like 18–22°C all year — perfect for tea estates, walks and the scenic train.

Month by month, at a glance

• January–March: calm southern seas, peak blue-whale season, great leopard tracking in Yala.
• April: warmest month; Sri Lankan New Year; the hills come alive.
• May–September: east coast shines; surf at Arugam Bay; the Minneriya elephant gathering.
• July–August: the Kandy Esala Perahera festival.
• October–November: lush green hills, full waterfalls, calm in-between seas.
• December: perfect southern sunshine and festive beach season.

Insider tips

Monsoon rain is usually a short afternoon downpour, not all-day grey — mornings are almost always bright. And April and October are a photographer's dream: green landscapes, fewer safari jeeps, lovely light.
