One of the joys of Sri Lanka is that it is a year-round destination. Thanks to two separate monsoons, there is always a sunny coast and a beautiful region to explore — you simply need to know where to go, and when.
The Two Monsoons, Simply Explained
The Yala monsoon (roughly May–September) brings rain to the south and west coasts and the hill country. The Maha monsoon (roughly October–January) brings rain to the north and east. When one coast is wet, the other is usually glorious.
December to March — South & West Coasts
Peak season. Perfect beach weather in the south and west (Galle, Mirissa, Bentota), ideal conditions for the Cultural Triangle, and whale watching off Mirissa. Wonderful for first-time visitors and honeymooners.
May to September — East Coast
While the south sees showers, the east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikuda, Arugam Bay) shines — calm, clear seas, superb snorkelling and world-class surf at Arugam Bay.
Wildlife & the Hill Country
Yala National Park is best from February to July when water is scarce and leopard sightings peak. The hill country (Kandy, Ella, Nuwara Eliya) is cool and green much of the year — pack a light layer for the evenings.
